Thanks for this tour through history. I knew when it was approx1500, when the Low Countries turned orange [start of the 80 year war, and being under Spanish rule].
But I never would have guessed little Lithuania once was a country from the East Sea in the north to the Caspian Sea in the south. Also the swelling/shrinking of Poland and Hungary was a surprise.
And what about all those city-states in what we now call Italy...
Lithuania and Poland have a chequered history and their relation (especially linguistically regarding name spellings) is still fraught! See: http://www.economist.com/node/17316729
